The Psychology of Beauty

On the different theories of beauty and the role of perception in the judgment of beauty.

The psychology of beauty is complex not just because the concept of beauty is as yet undefined but also because it is largely true that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder or how individuals perceive other people or things. Beauty can be attributed to everything that appeals to our senses and all objects that are compatible with our personal preferences. Beauty as we perceive it is largely a projection of our needs and beautiful objects or persons simply cater to our idealizations or fancies and reflect our natural need to relate to all that is appealing. Human beings are controlled by the senses and we tend to repeat processes or experiences that appeal to the senses, that are harmonious and have structure and form. Beauty appeals to our sense of sight so there is a preference for repeating the experience of beauty.

But how do we perceive beauty and why are some people or objects considered more beautiful than some others? Psychological tests have considered symmetry and proportion as extremely important in the perception of beauty. Beauty is also more holistic than specific as a beautiful object is judged as a whole package that is appealing rather than judged on the basis of its parts. Freudian or psychoanalytic explanations of beauty are scarce but psychoanalytic concepts could be used to consider our judgment of beauty as a projection or wish fulfillment so people attractive to us are typically ones who we admire or who in some way represent our own desires and fancies. Psychoanalysis can also be compatible with the idea that beauty is preferential perception when there are similarities with a parent. Most people are also considered beautiful when they have baby-faced features or a particular innocence in their faces. Beauty can also be culturally motivated so in certain eastern cultures women with beautiful feet are considered attractive whereas in the Victorian era in England, women with elegance and grace were the ones with smooth neck and tiny waist and modern western women are judged on the basis of their breasts, bottom and lips. The perception of beauty can change and studies have found that women may prefer softer features of men during particular times and more masculine features at other times depending on the stage of their reproductive cycle. So there are actually several theories of beauty which are discussed here one by one.

1. Beauty as Symmetry and Proportion - As you might have noticed in case of ancient architectural marvels, symmetry was extremely important. Whether it was the great pyramids in Egypt or the architectural wonders in Greece, symmetry and perfect dimensions played an important part in the history of aesthetics. This whole idea of symmetry also applies to every other object or person that we perceive so a person with perfectly symmetrical face would also be considered as an epitome of physical perfection. Perfectly shaped and sharp features are attractive to most people and the most beautiful faces are the ones which have very proportionate features. The same applies to the body and the low waist to hip ratio giving a curvy lower part of the body in women is considered more attractive than a straight shape which usually does not indicate fertility. As human beings are finally looking for evolutionary advantage women with a curvy shapes are considered more fertile and are thus more attractive to men. Similarly men with athletic and muscular bodies are attractive to women. However many men might not prefer extremely voluptuous or curvy women just like many women may not prefer extremely muscular men. This suggests that proportion is also about moderation or maybe human beings are more comfortable with certain moderation in what they perceive rather than excess and that way the perception of beauty may even depend on some sort of social programming.

2. Beauty as a whole rather than parts - When we consider something beautiful, we usually try to take a broad holistic view. Thus when we consider a rose as beautiful, we are less attentive towards each petal and consider the symmetry of the flower as a whole. In a similar manner, when we consider the face of a man or a woman, beauty is the composite quality that seems to represent the entire face of the individual rather than the parts or particular features. Our senses prefer a holistic view and perception of things and thus a person is considered attractive or beautiful only when all features add up to something really pleasant to the senses.

3. Beauty as projection and wish fulfillment - The perception of beauty is not only a mental process but also a deeply personal one. If say your lover has blonde hair, you might find other blonde haired people very attractive because you tend to project your inner fancies on to other people. The 'he' looks like my lover or 'she' looks like my lover is a common syndrome in our perception of beauty and people who are remotely similar to our mates are suddenly more beautiful to us than others. The same projection applies in case of selecting a mate who resembles a parent. If a man looks like your father or a member of the family he is obviously far more attractive to you than to others. The wish fulfillment theory is also equally true and when we want to be like someone in terms of talents or certain qualities, we naturally consider that person as absolutely perfect and beautiful. Some teenagers may idolize popular actors or actresses and the need to be like them also determines their own perception of beauty.

4. Beauty as innocence and charm - No one can deny that a charming personality with social confidence can be far more attractive than a dull personality. A person who has the inherent ability to attract individuals with the sheer force of personality and presence is considered highly attractive. In some way there may be an association between good looks and social confidence and sometimes individuals with good looks are also socially most accepted and thus more confident. Individuals with baby-face features with high or defined cheekbones and certain innocence on their faces are usually considered very attractive by both the sexes. Beauty is advantageous in social adaptation and good looking people are thus socially successful as well, as they get support and positive assessment from other people. However the opposite in also true and sometimes good looking women and even men can become extremely self-conscious and fail to develop adequate self confidence. Good looks can in certain cases become an impediment as good looking women who are also intelligent may be judged more on the basis of their looks rather than their intelligence and this is sometimes a sad fact in modern society.

5. Beauty as a product of culture and society - This is an accepted fact. The concept of beauty seems to change with time as society changes and the perception of beauty varies in different cultures. Dark skin is considered very attractive in Western societies and whiter skin is considered as attractive in Eastern societies, because of the element of novelty in both the cases. Feet and hair of women are important features in Eastern cultures whereas in the West, the woman's lips, and hips are considered important. The breasts of women are important indicators of beauty in all cultures and men's body and chin or jaw and certain masculine sharpness are also considered as attractive. Studies have indicated that women however tend to prefer dominant looking men during the first follicular stage in their reproductive cycle but prefer men with softer more feminine features when they are in their menstrual and ovulation stages. This may have some evolutionary advantage as men with feminine soft natures and faces are considered as more stable and more family oriented than men who have extreme masculinity or a sort of raw appeal. This is however too generalized and there are individual differences as well.

Finally, beauty is about how we perceive the outer world and how we integrate our needs and project our wishes on what we see in the external world. 'Beauty in the eyes of the beholder' in completely correct from a psychological viewpoint as our own preferences change with time and so do our desires, aesthetic sense and perception of beauty.

Importance of Beauty to Both Sexes

Males and Females have different definition of beauty. In all aspects, they are created different from each other. However they see beauty, both agrees that it is in fact important to our lives.

Beauty is one thing which people anywhere is concerned of thus are trying to attain always. Especially for women, beauty is everything. It is woman nature to always beautify them. You will find very few ladies who don't care about beauty. It is probably considered as the lifeblood of womanhood. Though not everyone is given the physical elegance, most women do their best to be beautiful from inside out. Different generations have passed yet beauty is a woman's top priority. Regardless of the gender, beauty has played vital importance to any human being. Learn the reasons why beauty is important to man.

Understanding these reasons shall make you see it's a perfect idea to just anyone to consider it important. Below are the usual significance of maintaining beautiful regardless your age or gender.

1. It gives you a god feeling of yourself. Physical appearance has always been regarded as one of the differentiators of people in the society. Anything beautiful is likely to succeed any career or endeavour being explored. In a job interview, for instance, it can be common to have several intelligent and smart applicants but it is rare to find a pretty and smart applicant. Whatever the job applied for is, beauty is a factor to get that job. In almost any industry, when you are beautiful you are most likely to get a job done. People react favourable to beautiful entities hence charm added to intelligence is indeed a "wow" factor. If you look good, you can always feel good about yourself. In getting a career, that's the most important perception towards oneself.

2. It boosts self esteem. When you believe that looking good is feeling good, your confidence level will be as high as the salary that anyone can get for a job. That makes a lot of difference; to be confident of yourself. When you are confident about yourself, your outlook in life is impacted. The moment you see yourself as beautiful, your self esteem is telling you that you can do just everything thus you become successful in everything you do. Your outlook can always be reflected with people interaction.

3. It makes you the center of attention. It is a natural instinct to desire attention from other people. May it be at school or at work, even at home, we feel good when we know that we have people's attention. Whether you like it or not, when you are beautiful, you attract attention. That realization will absolutely make you feel good about yourself.

4. It provides you self-pride. Nothing is wrong to feel that you are taking pride of your beautiful look as long as you are not mean about it. When you are beautiful, not only that you make others proud of you but most importantly, it makes you proud of yourself. Self motivation is the greatest motivation someone can achieve. Other people may always be there to boost your feelings toward your own actions but the most powerful motivator of positive actions towards our work or simple activities is us.

Understanding these reasons why beauty is important should make you realize that anyone can be beautiful. Indeed, "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder." We are what we feel we are.

Anti Aging Technology Or the Search For Beauty and Eternal Youth

The search for the Fountain of Youth has been an allusive quest for all who have searched it out. To remain eternally young, or at least to look eternally young, is the stuff of myth and legend except, it seems, for those in the cosmetic and health food industries and the celebrities who hawk their products. Most of us remember story about the adventures of the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, Puerto Rico's first Governor, who explored present day Florida in 1513 in search of the Fountain of Youth. Juan was not the first to try to find "youth in a bottle", Herodotus mentions a fountain with very special waters somewhere in Ethiopia and thought this is what gave the Ethiopians exceptional longevity. Myths abound about healing waters dating from at least the time of Alexander the Great who, together with his servant, crossed the land of darkness in search of healing waters. Such stories also appear in the Qur'an as well as the New Testament in the Gospel of John when Jesus heals a man using the curative waters from the Pool of Bethesda.

Today youth and beauty have become interchangeable and according to Wikipedia, beauty is a characteristic of a person, animal, place, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure.  As a cultural phenomenon, beauty has been extremely commercialized and to look young is to be beautiful.  However, it has not always been that way.  In Classical Greek times the word for beautiful originates from the Greek word "ripe" or "of its time".  A ripe fruit was considered beautiful, whereas a young woman trying to appear older or an older woman trying to appear younger would not be considered beautiful.  The concept of beauty involves interpreting whether an object, inanimate or animate, is in balance and in harmony with nature.  However, this interpretation is subjective in nature and, as is often said, "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder".  The general concept of beauty appears to be similar amongst different cultures and genders and may be linked to the concept of symmetry because it suggests the absence of flaws or defects. The Western idea of beauty emerges from the early Greek philosophers before the writings of Socrates.  This pre-Socratic school of thinking saw a strong relationship between mathematics and beauty with the "golden ratio" being the standard.

The "golden ratio", 1:1.618 was the ratio between the length and width of a rectangle. The more an object exhibited the proportions of this ratio the more beauty it possessed.  Although first applied in architectural terms, this ratio was the standard for Greek buildings and temples like the Parthenon.  Later, Greek sculptors like Dorifor and Policlet used this ratio to create statues of the human form.  The ratio of the height of statue versus the distance from the navel of the sculpture to its feet was in the "perfect" ratio of 1:1.618.   Statues from this period that depicted the human form were produced according to these philosophical tenets of symmetry and became the ideal for beauty re-discovered in Renaissance Europe.  Women whose appearance demonstrated these characteristics were said to possess "classical beauty", a concept that still exists today.  Of course the concept of beauty has more than a purely aesthetic quality.  There are social and psychological factors in play as well when we as individuals or as a culture defines beauty.  One cannot exclude the Inner Beauty, possessed by individuals.  Qualities like grace, charm, personality, honesty, integrity, congeniality, and humor combine with an individual's physical characteristics to mold our opinion as to what is beautiful.

Attempting to define a cosmetic product as a "beauty" product is a virtual impossibility when one considers all the factors that make a person beautiful.  Maybe the ancient Greeks had it right, and trying to equate youth with beauty is a fatal flaw in the way we think about beauty today.  Unfortunately, the consumer has been brainwashed to believe in this false assertion.  This is why there is so much emphasis placed on products claiming to have anti-aging benefits.  We, as formulators of products, are obliged to help dispel this myth when we make claims about the products that we create.  There is no product, whether a cream, serum, or pill that will halt the march of time.  The best that we can hope to achieve is to try to maintain skin health and to slow the effects that the normal aging process.  After all, wrinkles are nothing more than the service stripes of life.  We can reduce them but we cannot eliminate them permanently and their existence does not make a woman any less beautiful.  Our concern should be to provide cosmetic products that do what they say they are going to do and not false hopes and promises.  There are many products on the market that claim to have health benefits, and it is up to the consumer to do a little research to see if these products do all that they claim to do.

Antioxidants are a case in point.  It is widely reported and accepted by the general public that antioxidants are important in preventing disease and reducing the effects of aging.  One of the most widely used marketing phrases is "clinical studies have shown".  Nevertheless, what does that really mean?  It is important for the public to understand that there are many types of clinical studies.  There are studies done on animals, studies using human subjects, and studies that are just done on cell cultures in a petri dish in the lab. Therefore, not all studies are created equal.  Just because a natural product or drug is shown to be effective in animal models this does not mean that it will be effective in human beings.  We know this from countless animal studies using anti-cancer drugs.  There are many substances that prevent or reduce tumor growth in mice but have no effect on solid tumors in human beings.  When it comes to cosmetics, there are very few clinical human studies that are statistically significant.  However, one natural product, lycopene, has been widely studied and has been shown in human studies to be effective in reducing the damage caused by UV radiation and may help to prevent certain skin cancers when applied topically.  Lycopene, however, when taken in pill form does not seem to build up high enough levels in the skin to have any protective value.   Resveratrol, an antioxidant extracted from grapes, and is widely touted by celebrity physicians on some very popular television programs as well as the internet as being the anti-aging miracle product, has never been shown to be of any benefit in  any human studies when taken orally.  There is a body of evidence that does suggest resveratrol to be of benefit when applied topically to the skin surface.

Biopsy specimens taken from the skin of patients who have undergone cosmetic laser therapy and have applied antioxidants post-operatively to the treated areas, have demonstrated an increase in both collagen and elastin production in the sub-cutaneous dermal layers. The increased production of these two substances is responsible for an increase in skin thickness and tone with an accompanying decrease in fine lines and wrinkles. Patients who received cosmetic laser therapy alone did not show this increase.   These results confirm that the application of skincare products containing these two antioxidants can be of significant benefit in maintaining skin health and appearance.

Another claim that is often made is that the less expensive products are just as good as the more expensive ones.  This may or may not be true.  It all depends on the ingredients and the results that you are looking to obtain.  For the most part, products containing organic and natural ingredients will cost more than mass produced cosmetics made with synthetic ingredients. Products containing parabens may plug pores and lead to skin outbreaks.  Products containing preservatives may cause skin reactions and redness. It is a popular misnomer that products containing sodium laureth sulfate may cause cancer.  In fact, there is not a single clinical study demonstrating this to be the case.  It is up to the consumer to research exactly what ingredients are contained in a particular skincare product, do those ingredients exert a beneficial effect, are there any side effects to any of the ingredients, and  is there a less expensive product that will really do the same thing as the product in question.  In the area of marketing, "a picture is not always worth a thousand words".  When you see before and after results from the use of a particular product it is important to ask yourself if the photos were taken under the same conditions.  Is the "before" photo taken without makeup and "after" photo taken with makeup. Has the "after" photo been re-touched to improve its appearance? This information will certainly make a big difference in the perception a consumer has about a particular product, but perception does not always equate to reality.

Once the consumer understands what to expect from a product and what questions to ask, the risk that they will be disappointed by that product should be greatly reduced. Manufacturers of cosmetics should, in my opinion, explain to consumers the benefits of each of the ingredients contained in their products and if the results that were obtained are backed by human clinical studies. By the same token, the consumer should not expect un-realistic results from any cosmetic product or aesthetic procedure. They should do their homework and try to research the best that they can to see what product is best suited for their skin needs and what results they can realistically hope to achieve. I do not know if this article will ease the pain of getting older but, hopefully, it will help you to make more informed choices about skincare products, what results you should expect to obtain and most importantly be happy with who you are. Remember, getting older is better than the other alternative.

How to Be Beautiful in Just a Minute

What does it really takes to be beautiful? Almost all individuals living in this world are all eager enough to appear at their very best. Beauty is indeed the first criterion of socialization. It is part of the norms of the society. It can never be denied that physical appearance of a person affects the entire activities of his or her life. Since the physical attributes of a person has something to do with his or her level of confidence, it is already an accepted fact of the society.

Artists, stage performers and even models are adored because of their beauty and appearance. Hollywood stars are known to have the most beautiful faces of the history. They are admired because they justify the exact meaning of beauty.

Since it is understood that it is an edge to have a pretty face, most of the people especially women are trying several kinds of beauty products. They are often encouraged to use products such as skin whitener, slimming pills and cosmetic products that were particularly endorsed by their admired artists. They are thinking that they will acquire the same qualities of they will use the same products that were endorsed by a particular artist of their choice.

However, cosmetic products such as make-up and body creams are created to enhance the beauty of a particular person. Enhancement is different from replacement. If you are going to use make-up on your face you are probably aiming to enhance your physical qualities such as your nose, eye lashes and eyebrows. An expensive make-up will last only for about eight to ten hours. If you are going to use such products you must remember that it is just temporary and will never last a day.

Nevertheless there are also some individuals who choose to submit themselves in a plastic surgery. They often believe that it is the perfect way to make them beautiful and attractive. Unlike make-up its result can be permanent. However its quality will depend on the skills of the surgeon who have performed the operation. This method of making yourself beautiful brings you a lot of risks. It is even expensive and you are destroying your natural qualities.

If you really want to look attractive you must first know the reasons and qualities of an attractive person. There has been a clear misconception about beauty. Generally, the physical feature of a person represents his or her genetic traits. It would be really hard to differentiate beauty since it should have not been compared at all.

Beauty depends on how you perceive it. It is not a universal law that will govern us with our choices. A person can only be beautiful if she knows how to manage herself even without the use of make-up. Everyone has his and her own standards in terms of the physical appearance of a person. Your natural beauty depends on your thoughts and beliefs. Your thoughts are stronger than any cosmetic products on earth and its inner beauty will last forever. You can be beautiful at anytime you want when you believe.
